What You'll Learn

Our Intermediate Powerboat course bridges the gap between basic handling and advanced coastal skills, giving you the confidence to plan and execute longer passages by day.

Although this course can be done in 2 days, we prefer to extend this course to 3 days to properly build a foundation in navigation, pilotage, boat handling in rougher weather, collision regulations and using electronic aids chartplotters and AIS.

This course is ideal for those looking to develop their coastal cruising abilities, and equips you with the skills and knowledge needed to operate safely and independently beyond familiar waters.

Course Covers

  • Coastal passage planning
  • Tidal heights and streams in planning
  • Pilotage into unfamiliar harbours and marinas
  • Boat handling in rougher weather
  • Advanced close-quarters manoeuvring
  • Using electronic aids – chartplotter and AIS
  • Collision regulations (COLREGs) in practice

Frequently Asked Questions

What time do courses start and finish?

Courses run from 9:30 to 17:00.

How many students are on each course?

There is a maximum of 3 students to 1 instructor on each boat.

What should I bring with me?

Sunglasses, prescription glasses (if needed), suncream, waterproof clothing - ideally a drysuit if you have one, sturdy waterproof footwear, water, hat and gloves.

Do you have waterproof clothing for me to use?

Yes – please let us know at time of booking, we require 1 week’s notice.

Is there parking on site?

Yes, there is a car park which is free of charge.

What happens if it is bad weather?

It is rare that we need to cancel courses due to bad weather. Our location on the Medway means we have a good sheltered location to train in. However if this is the case we can find a mutually suitable time to rearrange.

I can get this course cheaper elsewhere - why does this cost more than some other courses?

We use high spec equipment, our trainers are all Advanced Powerboat Instructors and we pay a good wage for the industry to reflect their skillset. Cutting course costs will inevitably lead to cutting corners elsewhere, and we believe in high quality equipment and training quality.
